Birds of Taquaril, District of Pedro do Rio, Petrópolis-RJ

 

 

        

The State of Petrópolis still has many natural areas, with possibility of watching many species of birds of interest for birdwatchers. In our first visit to the region we counted on the contribution (with the system contribution-exchange) of the biologist Jose Fernando Pacheco, which stayed from February 6 to February 7 of 2010, in the Taquaril region, District of Pedro do Rio, Petrópolis-RIO DE JANEIRO (22º 18 ' 33” S - 43º 05. '14”), where he made its report, evidencing 146 species of birds, as you can follow in the list below.

We intend to return to the location to continue the observations and to increase the registers of the local avifauna.

Report by biologist Jose Fernando Pacheco, from the first ornithological visit:

The following list includes birds observed by us in the system contribution-exchange, within the limits of the Pousada Paradise, Taquaril, District of Pedro do Rio, Petrópolis-Rio de Janeiro (22º 18 ' 33” S - 43º 05. '14”). Our visit of observations between February 6 and 7 of 2010, increased our previous personal records of August 2 and 3 of 2008 and of November 28 and 29 of 2009, where we had been observed a total of 146 species of birds, in about 32 hours of field work. The visited area of 80 hectares and varied altitude of 950 the 1,600 meters is composed of remainders of bioma Atlantica forest (Mata Atlântica), more specifically of alti-montana forest, in differents stages of recovery, located in mountain of Serra do Mar.

           In August, we had the chance to find the White-bearded Antshrike ( Biatas nigropectus; Papo-branco) and  Ferruginous Pigmy-Owl (Glaucidium brasilianum; Caburé), uncommon species in the region. In November, it was a privilege to observe, flying above the area, big individuals of the Crowned Eagle (Harpyhaliaetus coronatus; Águia-cinzenta) and Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle (Buteo melanoleucus; Águia-chilena). The most important registry was, without a doubt, in February, when we saw the Stripe-tailed Yellow-Finch (Sicalis citrina; Canário-rasteiro), vocalizing in the adjacent rocky on the Jequitibá trail. This is nothing less than the second registry for the state of Rio de Janeiro.

In local avifauna the highlights are: the Black Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus tyrannus; Gavião-pega-macaco), the Band-winged Nightjar (Caprimulgus longirostris; Bacurau-da-telha), the Large-tailed Antshrike (Mackenziaena leachii; Borralhara-assobiadora), the Dusky-tailed Antbird (Drymophila malura; Choquinha-carijó), the Red-eyed Thornbird ( Phacellodomus erythrophthalmus; João-botina-da-mata), the Velvety Black-Tyrant (Knipolegus nigerrimus; Maria-preta-de-garganta-vermelha), the Half-collared Sparrow (Arremon semitorquatus; Tico-tico-do-mato) and the Ultramarine Grosbeak (Cyanoloxia brissonii; Azulão).
