Birds of Canavieiras - BA

Despite the large extractive exploitation of crabs and fish in their mangroves, as well as the old cocoa farm, the Conty of Canavieiras, in Bahia, still has large remaining areas of rich Bahian Atlantic Forest, known for its great biodiversity.

Besides miles of mangroves that enter the rivers Pardo and Salsa, the most important of the region, there are large areas of dunes, beyond the rainforest itself, with large vegetation, inhabited, besides the great variety of birds, mammals threatened with extinction
.

Area of large crops of cocoa (cacao), made in the shade of the forest that eventually provide habitat for many species of birds. Today most of these crops are forsaken in view of the plague that raged through the region, which increased the natural area, and thus environments for wildlife.

We  (Antonio Silveira accompanied by the biologist Maurício Arantes) went a few times to visit forest regions in private areas, mainly in Fazenda (farm) Country (in 1994, 2009 and 2010) as well as on 1.29.2010. We navigated the river Salsa for about 20 km, which is a tributary of the Pardo river , with its banks in the town of Canavieiras. The river Salsa is spectacular for its natural beauty and scenic, and very rich in bird species on its margins, where there are natural forests, a few clearings for pastures and crops of cocoa, most of them abandoned.
